This is what it looks like when a mama finally says yes to herself.
When Allison first reached out about documenting her third pregnancy, there was something in the way she talked about it that stuck with me. She had two babies before this one and had not documented either pregnancy with a session. This time she wanted to do things differently. She wanted to slow down and actually hold onto this season because she knows how quickly it passes. And I am so glad she did. I want to tell you about what we created together, because I think her story might sound a little familiar to some of you.
The Maternity Session
We started in my studio here in El Dorado Hills, and from the moment this family walked through the door the energy in the room was just wonderful. Allison's two boys, full of life and personality, piled onto the bed alongside their mama and dad and just settled right in. There was nothing forced or rehearsed about any of it. They were just themselves, which is always when the most beautiful images happen.
Allison looked absolutely radiant. She had this quiet glow about her that you see in mamas who are genuinely at peace with the season they are in. Looking down at her bump with that soft smile, her boys tucked in on either side of her, her husband steady and present beside her. I kept thinking, she is going to be so glad she has these.
The studio held everything so beautifully that day. That soft diffused light, the clean neutral backdrop, the warmth of a family who clearly just loves being together. It was one of those sessions where I hardly had to direct anything at all. I just got to watch and capture.
And Then the Baby Arrived
A few weeks later I got the message that the baby was here, and we started planning the follow up session at Folsom Lake.
I want to say something about families who bundle their maternity and newborn sessions together, because Allison's story is such a perfect example of why I love offering this. There is something extraordinary about having both chapters side by side. The anticipation and then the arrival. The bump and then the baby. When you lay those images next to each other the story they tell together is so much more powerful than either one alone.
Now back to the session… we met on one of those golden summer evenings where the light through the oak trees does something almost magical. The grass was long and wild, the sky was warm and open, and this little family of five showed up with so much joy and so much energy that honestly it set the tone for the whole session.
The two older boys were absolute characters. Full of movement and laughter and that particular brand of little boy energy that makes a session feel alive. And then there was the baby, so new and so peaceful, completely content in his parent’s arms while everything wonderful happened around him.
Watching Allison hold her newborn that evening while her boys leaned in close, all of them together under that big oak tree with the light falling soft and golden around them, I thought about what she had said when she first reached out. That she wanted to do things differently this time. That she wanted to actually hold onto this season.
She did. And these images are going to remind her of that for the rest of her life.
