El Dorado Hills & Sacramento Senior Photographer
The sky was moody, and she was luminous.
I want to start with the weather, because it ended up being the best part of the whole session.
We had a gray, heavy sky that afternoon, the kind that makes some people want to reschedule, but this senior looked at it and shrugged. She put on a beautiful dress with little puffed sleeves, shook out her hair, and walked into a hillside of tall golden grass like she had been waiting all year to do exactly that.
I have photographed enough families to know that the light you hope for isn’t always the light that makes the best images. Golden sunsets are always dreamy, but I promise you that there is something special that happens when soft clouds fill the sky. It brings out the deep colors in the landscape, likemoody, this session where the grass turned a honey color and the yellow wildflowers popped against all that gray, and every frame felt a little like a scene from a book you read as a girl and never quite forgot.
Capturing Who She Really Is
The thing I care about most at a senior session is not the pose or the outfit. It is whether, years from now, the senior (and their parents) will look at these images and recognize themself, and this time in their life. Every senior walks in with their own way of moving and her own kind of quiet or loud, and my job is to notice it and let it show. Olivia is the perfect example, she is thoughtful and unhurried, and I never wanted to rush that out of her. So we gave her room. We slowed down, let the evening unfold, and waited for the moments when she felt comfortable enough to simply be herself. That is when the real her shows up, and it is the reason a good senior gallery feels like a portrait of a person rather than a collection of photos.
Letting Her Lead
We spent the afternoon wandering the foothills near Folsom and El Dorado Hills, from an open golden hillside to a quiet wooden footbridge tucked under the trees. I never plan a senior session as a checklist of spots. We let the place and the person decide where to go next, and the images feel more like her because of it.
Just like I let the senior guide where we explore during their session, I also want them to choose the perfect styling and outfits for their session. This ensures that they feel truly themselves. Olivia picked each dress herself, soft, romantic styles that suited the landscape perfectly and felt like they came right out of a storybook.
And just when I thought this session couldn’t get any more special… she brought one more thing with her…her childhood stuffed monkey.
I get a little emotional every time a senior does this. She is about to leave home and become someone new, and yet she still wanted that worn little monkey beside her for her pictures. It has clearly been loved for years, being a safe space for each chapter of her life so far, and it was there for this chapter too.
There is something so tender about a senior session that holds both of those things at once: the young woman she is becoming and the little girl who is still part of her. Years from now, when she looks back at these images, she will see how grown up she was and also how sweet. I hope more seniors feel free to bring something like that.
If You Have a Senior at Home
This is the Class of 2027 season, and I know how quickly this year is going to move. It feels long in October and then suddenly it is graduation, and you are wondering where the time went.
A senior session is a chance to stop and look at who your child has become right now, before everything changes again. Not the version from their school photo, but the one you see at home, the one who is thoughtful or silly or fierce or all of those at once. I would be honored to document your senior in the way that feels most true.
If you are thinking about a senior session, reach out and we can talk through locations, outfits, and what feels like your senior. I am also happy to talk about including parents in a few images, because those tend to become the ones families treasure most.
