How to Style Your Senior Session: Timeless Tips for Today’s Seniors
Senior year is such a big milestone
and your photos should feel just as unforgettable as this season of your life.
When I photograph seniors in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and throughout the Sacramento area, one of the first questions I always hear is,
“What should I wear?”
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself. But after photographing so many seniors, I’ve noticed a few styles and trends that look incredible on camera right now.
Layers, Layers, Layers
Layers instantly add interest to your photos. Think lightweight jackets, oversized blazers, or cardigans you can take on and off between shots. They give you variety without needing a full wardrobe change.
Neutrals + Pops of Color
If you are not sure which colors to start with, you can never go wrong with neutrals. Earthy neutrals are timeless (think creams, tans, and soft grays and browns), but pairing them with a pop of bold color is very on-trend. A burnt orange sweater, a dusty blue dress, or even fun sneakers can bring your photos to life without feeling too busy.
Dresses That Flow
Flowy dresses, especially in soft florals, neutrals, or even solid jewel tones, always photograph beautifully in golden fields or nature spots around El Dorado Hills and Folsom. They add movement and an effortless vibe to your session.
Casual Classics with a Twist
Denim will always be a senior staple, but pairing your favorite jeans with a cropped top, vintage-inspired tee, or oversized sweater keeps the look current. A pair of white sneakers or boots can polish it off while still feeling fun and youthful.
Bring Your Personality In
The trend I love most? Making it personal. Your outfit is just the start. You can also bring along your favorite hat, sunglasses, or something that tells your story (a guitar, your jersey, even your furry best friend). Those little details make your session unique to you.
Outfit Changes Are Encouraged
Most seniors bring a couple of outfits, and I always recommend mixing it up. Maybe something casual or something dressy, and even maybe something that feels a little outside the box. Don’t forget to bring that extra layer or fun accessory (like a hat). The variety gives your gallery so much depth.
At the end of the day, the best “trend” is the one that makes you feel confident. When you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it shines through in your photos, and those are the images that you and your family will treasure for years.
