When someone asks me what I love about photographing families…
When someone asks me what I love about photographing families,
I tell them it’s witnessing the small, beautiful pieces of your story continuously unfold.
It’s the absolute privilege to get to spend time with each sweet family for every milestone in their journey. Every time I walk up to a session with a family I’ve photographed before, there’s this quiet sense of familiarity… like stepping into a chapter I've already lovingly bookmarked. Your kids recognize me, you know my prompts and silly jokes, and we slip right back into documenting your life exactly as it is right now.
This month, I’ve been reflecting on a few families who have allowed me to grow right alongside them, and it feels like such a gift.
The McMahan Family
This lovely family been with me from the very start of my photography journey, as you can see in the middle (pink sky) image above. They have trusted me from the early years, to their most recent session, and I couldn’t feel more honored. Its been such a gift to see how the McMahan girls have blossomed into their own little personalities.
Their almond orchard session will always be one of my favorites… soft light, tiny hands, and adorable smiles… pure sweetness. Seeing them now, more confident and curious, reminds me how fast seasons shift and why these photos mean so much to not only the McMahan family but also to me as an artist.
Baby Brynlee
While I was reflecting on these beautiful growing families, I kept thinking about Baby Brynlee’s story as well, a little girl who reminded me just how meaningful it is to document both the “waiting” and the “arrival.” There is a reason so many families book my Maternity and Newborn session bundle.
When you’re waiting for your new baby, there is this mix of excitement and quiet wonder, the kind that fills the air when you’re imagining who they will be and who you will become.
Then when they are finally earthside.… and it felt like the story had come full circle. The anticipation became reality. The love they hoped for became the love they could now hold.
Seeing both chapters side by side is powerful.
It reminds families that their story didn’t start the day their baby arrived… it started long before that, in the quiet prayers, the soft hand-on-belly moments, the tiny kicks that made everything feel real.
The Bennet Family
I still remember walking into their home for Baby Bodey’s newborn session, it was so filled with all the joy and the love that surrounds a family when a new little one arrives. Photographing them again now, as Bodey and his big brother are old enough to run around and let out big belly laughs, as their loving parents look on… it feels like a full-circle moment, and one that I am endlessly grateful for.
The Nycz Family
From their completely dreamy maternity session by the Golden Gate, there has always been something stunning about this family. Their warmth shows up in the little moments, the way they soaked up every moment during their maternity session, and then the way that same love softened even more once Regan was finally in their arms.
Watching their story unfold in real time reminded me, once again, of how meaningful it is to document both sides of a journey. There is the anticipation, the wondering, the dreaming, the gentle touches over a growing belly. And then there is the beautiful reality when the heart and home you couldn’t imagine having enough room to love even more…actually does the moment your newest little one arrives.
When families choose to blend both maternity and newborn portraits, it becomes so much more than two photo sessions. It becomes a woven story of who they were in the waiting, and who they became in the welcoming. And witnessing that transformation… it never loses its magic for me.
