There is something incredibly tender about being invited back into a family’s life, again and again.
It usually starts quietly. A newborn curled against their chest. Sleepless eyes. That fragile, hazy season where time feels suspended and everything is new. In those early sessions, parents often tell me they feel like they’re just trying to keep up, trying to remember what day it is, trying to soak it all in before it slips past them.
And then somehow, without warning, the baby is walking.
The next time I see them, there are toddler giggles, sticky fingers, and tiny shoes kicked off halfway through our session. Parents laugh more easily. They move with confidence. Their love feels settled, deeper, lived-in.
This is the part of photography that still humbles me.
To witness the evolution of a family. To see how love stretches and reshapes itself over the years. To watch parents grow into themselves just as much as their children do.
When families choose to return year after year, the photos stop being about a single moment. They become a story. One that holds the softness of beginnings and the beauty of everything that follows. The quiet milestones. The loud ones. The seasons you don’t realize are fleeting until you’re already standing on the other side of them.
I think there’s a misconception that you only need photos during the “big” moments. A newborn. A milestone birthday. A graduation. But so much of family life lives in between. In the way your child still reaches for your hand. In how your home feels fuller each year. In the expressions you don’t notice changing until you see them side by side.
These are the images that become heirlooms.
The ones that remind you not just what your family looked like, but how it felt to be right there in the middle of it.
Photographing families as they grow, here in El Dorado Hills and throughout the Sacramento area, has taught me that time doesn’t slow down. But memory can be held. Gently. Intentionally. With care.
