Why Styling Makes All the Difference in Your Photography Session
El Dorado Hills & Sacramento Family Photographer
I have photographed a lot of families over the years, and if there is one thing I have noticed, it is this. The sessions that feel the most effortless and produce the most beautiful galleries are almost always the ones where the family came prepared and felt genuinely confident in what they were wearing.
Styling is not about being perfect.
It is not about matching head to toe or wearing something stiff and formal that does not feel like you. It is about showing up feeling like the most beautiful version of yourself so that the only thing left to do is simply be present with the people you love most.
And that is exactly what I want for every single family I photograph.
The Mistakes I See Most Often
I share these gently and with so much love, because I have seen even the most prepared families run into these. Being aware of them ahead of time makes all the difference.
Leaving it until the last minute.
This is the one I see most often and the one that causes the most unnecessary stress. Pulling together outfits for an entire family the night before a session rarely ends well. Colors clash, things do not fit the way you hoped, and you arrive feeling rushed rather than relaxed. Give yourself at least two to three weeks to think through your looks, try things on, and make any adjustments if something is not working.
Shoes that do not match the vibe.
This one is so easy to overlook and yet it shows up in photos more than people expect. A beautiful flowing dress paired with chunky sneakers, or a casual relaxed family look suddenly interrupted by formal dress shoes, can pull the eye away from the image in a way that is hard to ignore. Think about footwear as part of the complete look rather than an afterthought.
Matching too perfectly.
There is a fine line between cohesive and costume, and perfectly matching outfits can sometimes make a gallery feel a little stiff or dated. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, think about building a palette. Choose two or three tones that complement each other beautifully and let each person wear something that feels genuinely like them within that palette.
Wearing something uncomfortable.
If you are tugging at your dress, fidgeting with your collar, or worrying about how something looks all session long, it will show in the images. Comfort and confidence go hand in hand. Choose pieces you feel genuinely lovely in and the rest will follow naturally.
Busy patterns and large logos.
These tend to date quickly and pull focus away from faces and connection, which are always the most important things in a photograph. Soft textures, simple layers, and solid tones or very subtle prints tend to age beautifully and keep the attention exactly where it belongs.
Here’s What to do Instead
Create a Look That Feels Like You
The most beautiful family galleries I have ever created have one thing in common. Everyone looked like themselves, just a slightly more intentional version. So here is how I encourage my clients to approach the process.
Start with mama. Choose her outfit first, because it tends to anchor the palette and set the tone for everyone else. From there, build the rest of the family around her in complementary tones rather than identical ones. Dad should feel like he belongs in the same frame without competing for attention. Children look their most beautiful in soft, comfortable pieces that let them move freely and feel like themselves.
Think about texture and layers. A linen shirt, a soft knit, a flowy wrap or kimono. These add visual interest and depth to images without relying on pattern or color.
And please, think about the season and the setting. A beautifully styled family in warm earth tones at golden hour in the Sacramento foothills looks and feels completely different to the same family in crisp whites in my studio. Let the location inspire the palette and everything will come together so much more naturally.
Style & Select
One of the things I am most proud to offer my clients is access to Style & Select, my personal styling program that takes so much of the guesswork out of this process. Through a curated moodboard and personalized color guidance tailored specifically to your session, Style & Select walks you through building a complete look for your whole family from the comfort of your own home.
So many of my clients have told me that this alone made them feel so much more excited and prepared for their session, and I love hearing that. Because that is exactly what it is there for. To make the experience feel joyful from the very beginning, not just from the moment the camera comes out.
The Client Closet
And if you would love to borrow something beautiful for your session, my client closet is here for you.
Over the years I have carefully curated a collection of flowing gowns and layering pieces for mamas, along with a selection of delicate wraps, bonnets, and gentle basics for babies. Everything in the closet has been chosen with intention, with softness, femininity, and timelessness in mind, so that whatever you choose will feel genuinely beautiful in your images rather than like something you just grabbed off a rack.
Whether you are a maternity mama looking for a stunning gown that honors your bump, a newborn mama wanting something soft and flowing for your newborn session, or a family mama who just wants to feel put together without spending hours shopping, the closet is there for you. Simply reach out ahead of your session and I will help you find something that feels just right.
A little note from me…
I know that styling can feel like one more thing on an already long list. But I truly believe it is one of the most meaningful investments of time you can make before your session. Not because the clothes matter more than the people wearing them, but because when you feel beautiful and prepared, you show up differently.
You are more relaxed, more present, and more yourself.
…And that is when the most extraordinary images happen.
If you ever have questions about what to wear or how to pull your look together, please reach out. Helping you feel confident and excited before your session is one of my very favorite parts of this whole experience.
